The LC1 Chair, also known as the Basculant Chair, was designed in 1928 and is a minimalist icon of 20th-century design. Unlike traditional armchairs, the LC1 was engineered with adjustability and clarity of structure in mind, reflecting the principles of functional modernism.
The name "Fauteuil Dossier Basculant " directly references the chair’s most innovative feature: its pivoting backrest, which adjusts to the sitter's movement and offers unexpected comfort for such a minimal frame. This design allowed the LC1 to remain elegant and light, while still responsive to the body — something radical at the time.
The designers:
Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, and Pierre Jeanneret created the LC1 as part of a broader collection for the Salon d’Automne in Paris (1929). The goal was to express the “art of living” through furniture that was not decorative, but logical, industrial, and humane.
