The Large Model Taccia Lamp, designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, is one of those rare objects that feels both experimental and perfectly resolved at the same time. Created in 1962, it was conceived almost like an industrial sculpture, built from materials that were never meant to meet: a heavy aluminum base, a thick glass diffuser, and a polished metal reflector that looks more like a mechanical component than a decorative element.
The Castiglioni brothers were famous for questioning how everyday objects should work, and Taccia is a perfect example of that mindset. Instead of designing a lamp that directs light downward, they flipped the logic and made one that reflects light upward, using the diffuser almost like an inverted bowl. The result is soft, indirect illumination and a form that feels architectural rather than ornamental.
It was playful, intelligent, and slightly provocative for its time, and it still is today. More than sixty years later, Taccia remains a lesson in how radical ideas can become timeless when they are guided by true design thinking.
