The concept of the gossip bench originated as a convenient resting spot for the telephone, which at the time was a bulky, stationary device. Originally just a shelf, it was positioned in hallways for easy access. As people began to sit while using the telephone, the shelf merged with a chair, creating a single, fashionable furniture piece.
