Florence Knoll (1917–2019) was an architect with a remarkable sense of style, shaped by an education under some of the greatest European modernists, including Marcel Breuer, Walter Gropius, and Mies van der Rohe. Her connections with influential figures like Alvar Aalto and the Saarinen family during her time at Cranbrook further refined her vision. Joining Knoll in New York, she shifted the company's aesthetic from Scandinavian to American Modernist, pioneering the Planning Unit and leaving a lasting impact through her signature "humanist modernism." When her husband, Hans Knoll, passed away in 1955, Florence took over the company, leading it to its most iconic era by collaborating with designers like Eero Saarinen and Harry Bertoia while contributing her own celebrated designs.

Knoll International was founded in New York in 1938 by Hans Knoll, the son of German modernist furniture maker Walter Knoll. Under Florence’s leadership after Hans’s untimely death, the company thrived, producing some of its most celebrated designs and solidifying its reputation as a beacon of modernist innovation. Known for her skillful management and visionary approach, Florence Knoll not only curated collaborations with legendary designers but also elevated Knoll's status as a leader in modern furniture design.
